Libya Flooding Kills More Than 1,000

Eastern Libya's city of Derna has been devastated by floods, with nearly a quarter of the city submerged after dams burst during a severe storm. As of Tuesday, more than 1,000 bodies have been recovered, and authorities fear that the final death toll will be significantly higher, describing the situation as "really, really big." Hichem Chkiouat, the Minister of Civil Aviation and a member of the emergency committee, described the catastrophic scene, saying, "I returned from Derna. It is very disastrous. Bodies are lying everywhere - in the sea, in the valleys, under the buildings." Chkiouat also noted that around 25% of the city had vanished due to the floods, with numerous buildings collapsing. The scale of the disaster has continued to grow, and Chkiouat indicated that the total death toll across the country could exceed 2,500, considering the increasing number of missing persons. Storm Daniel, which had previously affected Greece, struck Libya's eastern cities, including Benghazi, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The devastation has prompted urgent rescue and relief efforts. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has also expressed concerns that the number of victims could reach into the thousands.
