In an effort to tackle the severe consequences of climate change, a group of parliamentarians and environmental advocates from Liberia has reached out for collaboration with Nigeria.
The Liberian delegation, headed by Hon. Ernest Manseah Snr, engaged in separate discussions with the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Ecology and Climate Change at the National Assembly on Thursday.
Hon. Manseah Snr commended Nigeria’s initiatives in addressing climate change, highlighting that the nation is leading globally in this area. “We have come to learn from you, esteemed members of this committee, on how Nigeria has been addressing the impacts of climate change,” he remarked.
The visit from the Liberian delegation comes at a crucial time, as the effects of climate change are increasingly felt across African nations. Liberia, in particular, has been facing significant challenges such as severe flooding, soil erosion, and erratic weather patterns, which have adversely affected agriculture and livelihoods.
Nigeria’s experience in managing climate change offers important insights for Liberia. The country has established a National Climate Change Policy and Response Strategy, detailing actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change effects.
The partnership between Liberia and Nigeria is anticipated to emphasize knowledge exchange, capacity enhancement, and collaborative projects to tackle the repercussions of climate change.
As Hon. Manseah Snr pointed out, “We must unite to confront the challenges posed by climate change, which necessitate a collective approach and shared accountability.”
