KANO, Nigeria - Two skit creators, Ahmad Isa and Maryam Musa, have received a one-year prison sentence from a Magistrate Court in Kano state for distributing inappropriate videos on the TikTok app.
The Kano State Censorship Board arrested the pair for breaching the religious and moral standards upheld in the state. After admitting guilt, both Isa and Musa were sentenced to one year in jail, with the option to pay a fine of N100,000.
Barrister Garzali Maigari, representing the state, charged them with criminal conspiracy and the distribution of indecent materials online.
Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad, who oversaw the proceedings, also advised them to engage in better behavior moving forward.
This is not the first legal action taken against TikTok influencers in Kano.
In February 2024, the Kano Hisbah Board detained Murja Kunya over claims of immoral actions. Similarly, in June 2024, another prominent TikToker, G-Fresh al-Amin, was arrested for purportedly making inappropriate remarks online.
