Some leaders in the country have called for the return to a parliamentary system of government to boost development.
The leaders who converged in Ibadan, Oyo state to examine the state of the nation, said that the parliamentary system of government is germane to revamp the economy.
The leaders of thought spoke at a one-day symposium with the theme: “From the Founding Fathers to the Prodigal Sons and Daughters: The Challenge of Nation-building and Development.”
The symposium organised by the Rebirth Nigeria Group and Rebuilding Nigeria was held at the Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
Among those in attendance were Ambassador Yemi Farounbi; Prof. John Ayoade; Dr Sadiq Gombe; Chief Ndidi Benjamin, representing the President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu; Chief Okorie; Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, Deacon Owolabi Oladejo and Jare Ajayi.
According to them, “There is a need to make the central government weaker than other levels of government in the country. The central government is to concern itself only with issues that the federating units cannot handle; meaning that the central government should be smaller and smarter.
“Six regions were proposed perhaps in line with the present geo-political zones. But each region would be equal to the other in status and ranking.
“Restructuring into regions is not meant to abrogate states that we have presently. The regions would form the federating units to make the country known as the United Regions of Nigeria. Each region is to have its constitution and be autonomous.
“To avoid domination or even sit-tight syndrome, heads of each level of government should be rotational based on the constituents within that enclave. The head who would be from a part of the area in question would be a person from another part as deputy. The latter would automatically become the Head of the government at the end of the tenure of the incumbent.
“Given the huge sum of money being spent under the current presidential system, the symposiums advocated for a return to parliamentary system of government.”
