LAGOS, Nigeria - The Lagos State University (LASU) issued a statement on Tuesday expressing the need for prompt justice regarding the passing of a recent graduate, Adedamola Ogunbode, who was also known as Horlar.
This statement was released by Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the deputy registrar and coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations.
“The university management is deeply saddened to hear about the tragic demise of Ogunbode, a recent graduate from LASU,” it stated.
“The deceased, affectionately called Horlar, was allegedly murdered by a prophet in the Ojo area of Lagos State, purportedly for ritualistic reasons.”
“According to the information received by the management, Ogunbode, a 28-year-old graduate of Political Science Education, had been unaccounted for since January 16.”
Thomas-Onashile noted that security agencies' investigations indicated that the victim's mutilated body was reportedly discovered buried on the premises of a well-known church in the area.
“The prophet affiliated with the church has been apprehended and is currently cooperating with the police in their investigation. His premature passing is a significant loss to the entire university community, and we share in the sorrow of all who grieve his death,” she stated.
Thomas-Onashile strongly denounced the violence, emphasizing that the brutality and criminality associated with his death are intolerable in any society.
“We demand prompt and comprehensive action from the appropriate security agencies to ensure that those accountable are brought to justice and that the individuals responsible for this horrifying crime do not escape punishment,” she insisted.
She also urged the university community to remain calm, vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities while the inquiry is ongoing.
“The safety and security of our students is our utmost priority, and we are dedicated to working closely with law enforcement to guarantee that our university is a secure place for everyone,” she remarked.
Thomas-Onashile extended the university's condolences to Ogunbode's family and loved ones, wishing them strength and solace during this difficult time.
