LAGOS, Nigeria - Lagos State University (LASU) announced on Thursday that it will be graduating no less than 11,917 students during its 2023/2024 convocation ceremony.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, shared this information at a news briefing marking the commencement of the university's 28th Convocation Ceremony held at the Senate Chamber, Ojo Campus in Lagos.
Rocketparrot News reports that the convocation is set to take place from April 3 to April 10.
"As an institution, we take great pride in the chance to graduate another group of market-ready individuals, who are solution-oriented." Olatunji-Bello noted, "These graduates are thoroughly prepared to make a significant difference in both national and international arenas.
This year, 971 diploma students will graduate, with the following breakdown: 123 distinctions, 550 upper credits, 287 lower credits, and 11 passing grades.” She further revealed that 8,711 students would receive degrees from first-degree programs, with 192 earning first-class honors.
"Seventeen students will graduate with Unclassified (MBBS/BDS) degrees, 3,076 will receive second class upper division degrees, 4,397 with second class lower division, 990 with third class, and 39 with a pass. Out of the 2,235 postgraduate students graduating, we have 302 postgraduate diplomas, 1,132 academic master's degrees, 639 professional master's degrees, 125 Ph.D. degrees, and 37 professional doctoral degrees," she added.
The vice-chancellor announced that honorary doctorate degrees will also be bestowed upon distinguished individuals, in addition to the 162 doctoral degree graduates. "The university's Senate will award honorary doctorate degrees to two notable Nigerians: Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa Rtd., Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and former Military Governor of Lagos State, and Otunba Olufemi Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the growth of our university and the country.
“Additionally, Professor Joseph Olagunju, a long-serving and esteemed member of our faculty, will be promoted to the rank of distinguished professor,” Olatunji-Bello revealed. She also announced that Nwosu Isioma was named the overall best student for the 2023/2024 academic session, hailing from the Biochemistry Department with a CGPA of 4.93 and achieving First Class Honours.
The LASU vice-chancellor added that the university secured full accreditation for 43 of the 44 programs presented during the recent accreditation exercise held in October-November 2023, noting, "Only one program received interim accreditation."
She stated, "The results of the accreditation process, released in June 2024, validated that all programs in LASU were accredited, aligning with our administration's primary strategic goal.
"The university is committed to maintaining a leading position in academic excellence and innovation, aspiring to be the best in West Africa. We have consistently progressed along the path of quality education and research, resulting in numerous milestones."
