The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced that vehicles found driving against the traffic flow (one-way) will be confiscated and prosecuted under the applicable legal frameworks.
LASTMA's general manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made this statement in response to a head-on collision involving three heavy-duty trucks at the Flour Mills corridor on their way to Airways in Apapa, as reported by Taofiq Adebayo, the director of the public affairs and enlightenment department of LASTMA.
The initial investigation revealed that an empty flatbed truck, which was driving one-way, crashed into two oncoming container-laden trucks. Fortunately, there were no injuries resulting from the incident; however, it caused significant traffic disruption in the vicinity. It was noted that none of the trucks displayed visible number plates, which is a violation of traffic and vehicle identification laws.
LASTMA officers promptly arrived to control the traffic and ensure safety at the scene, before handing the vehicles over to the Police at the Area 'B' Command, Apapa.
Bakare-Oki denounced the reckless actions of certain truck drivers and cautioned all drivers, particularly those of articulated vehicles, against the dangerous practice of one-way driving.
He emphasized that such violations are subject to penalties under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
“LASTMA is dedicated to reinstating order through enforcement, ongoing education, and partnerships with relevant stakeholders,” he stated.
