LAGOS, Nigeria (NAN) - The Lagos State Government has announced that over two million passengers have utilized the Blue Line Rail since its inception, while state-operated buses transport an average of 42,000 commuters each day.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, shared this information during the Year 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, on Tuesday.
This event celebrated the second anniversary of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, highlighting significant achievements in the transport sector under the THEMES+ agenda.
Osiyemi indicated that the Lagos State Transport Policy, launched in May 2024, is currently in the implementation stage, emphasizing inclusivity, safety, affordability, and sustainability.
“Phase One of the Blue Line (Marina to Mile 2) has accommodated over two million passengers, and Phase Two (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko) is in development.
Phase One of the Red Line (Agbado to Oyingbo) is now functional with eight stations and additional rolling stock obtained, while Phase Two (Oyingbo to connect with the Blue Line at National Theatre) is in progress,” he explained.
He stated that since 2019, over 60 million commuters have benefited from state-run bus services, with daily ridership surpassing 40,000. Plans are underway to introduce new buses with Quality Bus Corridors being constructed, and the Abule-Egba Bus Terminal has been inaugurated.
“In terms of water transport, 15 domestically constructed Omnibus Ferries have been launched and are operational, with the Ijegun Egba Terminal now accessible.
The OMI EKO project, in collaboration with the French Development Agency (AFD), aims to deliver 25 terminals and 78 electric ferries.
In the past year, over 280,000 passengers have utilized ferry services, and 12 boats have been upgraded to ensure they meet safety regulations,” he noted.
Regarding road infrastructure and traffic management, the commissioner reported that 49 junction enhancement projects have been completed, including those currently ongoing at Ikorodu, Iju, and the Allen-Opebi-Toyin area.
He added that solar-powered Traffic Signal Lights, road markings spanning 67.9 km, new medians, laybys, and 3,941 parking spaces have also been created.
Osiyemi disclosed that the installed Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras have identified over 470,000 traffic violations, and the Vehicle Inspection Service has issued more than one million roadworthiness certificates.
He mentioned that the Lagos State Drivers' Institute has trained over 32,000 drivers in the past 13 months.
Moreover, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has trained over 800 staff members, removed over 100 broken-down vehicles, and revitalized its school safety advocacy program across 59 schools.
