The Lagos State government has warned drivers against making illegal payments to touts for unauthorized parking on bridges and other public spaces in the state.
This message was conveyed by the governor's special adviser on transportation, Sola Giwa, in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos.
The statement was signed by Taofiq Adebayo, director, public affairs and enlightenment Department, LASTMA.
Giwa highlighted that this notification was prompted by reports of private vehicle owners engaging with street touts for illicit parking.
He emphasized the importance of motorists adhering to government-installed road signs and urban infrastructure that clearly indicate designated "No Parking" areas.
“Noncompliance significantly contributes to congestion and disrupts the smooth flow of traffic. This directive arises from reports suggesting that private vehicle owners have been making deals with street touts for unauthorized parking privileges at various spots within the city.
Problematic areas affected by illegal parking include locations like Ebute-Ero, Ejalonibu, Adeniji-Adele, Oyingbo, Oworonsoki, Iyana-Ipaja, and Medical Road near Computer Village, among others. Vehicles are haphazardly parked on bridges and other restricted areas, worsening traffic gridlock,” he stated.
Reiterating the government's commitment to maintaining road order, Giwa expressed that the administration will not turn a blind eye to such illegal activities.
He asserted that drivers who attempt to excuse their violations by referring to payments made to touts would face severe enforcement actions.
“The Lagos State Government thus urges all motorists to follow the established traffic laws. They should avoid engaging with unscrupulous individuals who take advantage of public spaces for personal profit,” he concluded.
