Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced its plans to reduce the work week for civil servants in the state, as part of efforts to ease economic challenges faced by residents.
He made this announcement during a live media chat, ‘Sanwo Speaks’, a program that updates residents on measures being taken to alleviate economic burdens.
Starting from next week, civil servants from levels 1 to 14 will work three days a week, while those at levels 15 to 17 will work four days a week.
However, workers in the teaching sector will maintain their five-day work schedule, with the government ensuring additional transport support for them.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also addressed the rising cost of food, stating that his administration will open more markets across Lagos State where residents can purchase food items at discounted rates. "We will open Sunday Markets in at least 42 identified markets across Lagos State. You will be able to buy food items at a discounted price, up to N25,000," he announced.
He noted that there would be a 25% reduction in fares this weekend for the State Public Transport system, which includes BRT, Train, and Ferry services. The governor added that discussions were ongoing with various transport unions to reduce their fares as well.
Expressing empathy with the citizens, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of solving socioeconomic problems and called on the private sector to support the government's efforts. He challenged the private sector to replicate their role during the COVID-19 pandemic by contributing to the welfare of citizens.
The governor's announcement comes amidst efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation, demonstrating the government's commitment to the well-being of Lagosians.
