LAGOS STATE, Nigeria - Residents of Festac Town, Lagos State, have petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over an alleged breach of the rule of law by Federal Housing Authority (FHA) officials.
Their lawyer, Mr. Adetayo Bello, submitted the petition on Monday.
The petition alleges that FHA officials have continued demolishing properties in Festac Extension's 6th Avenue despite a valid court injunction.
It names FHA Zonal Manager Akintola Olagbenro, alongside Chief Chuka Umenne and Coach Sesi, as complicit in the alleged actions.
A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, presided over by Justice O. Awope, issued the restraining order on September 11, 2023, in favor of the Festac residents.
The injunction prevents FHA and its agents from demolishing buildings in Festac Town’s 6th Avenue or other areas until the resolution of suit No. ID/7397GCM/2023.
The petition reads: “This act constitutes contempt of court and a criminal abuse of power, posing a threat to public peace.”
The residents urged the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the FHA Zonal Manager and his associates for contempt of court.
They demand measures to halt further illegal demolitions and safeguard their rights and properties.
