LAGOS, Nigeria - In the midst of the ongoing redevelopment of Lagos’ waterfront infrastructure, the State Government has commenced a strategic partnership with FIABCI (International Real Estate Federation) to take advantage of global investment prospects in the sector, ultimately benefiting the state.
The government, via the Ministry of Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, indicated its intention to explore various avenues for high-impact collaboration with FIABCI to position Lagos as an attractive destination for real estate investors.
The investments being sought include Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for priority waterfront projects such as modern jetties, residential waterfront estates, floating hotels, and cruise terminals.
This was revealed by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, during the recently concluded 75th FIABCI World Real Estate Congress, held at Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos.
This event marked the first time the prestigious global congress took place on African soil, drawing over 400 delegates from around the world.
Alebiosu stated, “We aim to leverage FIABCI’s global network of real estate investors and technical partners to foster sustainable infrastructure development along our waterfront corridors.”
He emphasized that a significant takeaway from the congress was the pledge towards sustainability and Blue Economy initiatives, specifically the establishment of a joint taskforce to embed Blue Economy principles in Lagos’s coastal development plan.
These principles encompass environmentally mindful development, protection of marine resources, and upliftment of coastal communities.
He further highlighted that Lagos stands to benefit substantially from hosting the FIABCI congress, not only in terms of visibility but also through the exchange of ideas, investment leads, and technical insights.
The Commissioner referred to hosting the congress in Lagos as “a game-changer” for the state’s aspirations to become a prime destination for both investors and tourists.
Additionally, Alebiosu announced that the state government is finalizing preparations for its own International Waterfront Summit scheduled for July 2025.
He mentioned that this summit will build upon the discussions held at the FIABCI congress and act as a follow-up platform for more profound engagement with both local and international stakeholders. “Our objective is straightforward,” he concluded.
“To establish a world-class waterfront infrastructure in Lagos that promotes tourism, transportation, housing, and environmental sustainability, and this collaboration with FIABCI offers us a solid foundation to build upon.” With these initiatives, Lagos seems set to emerge as a leading center for coastal innovation and real estate investment in West Africa.
