The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has asserted that the current speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has consented to resign from her role following the intervention of All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders regarding the leadership turmoil in the legislative chamber.
Obasa revealed that Meranda indicated her willingness to step down during a peace meeting at the Lagos House in Marina, attended by prominent members of the ruling party in the state.
He made this statement on Thursday while answering questions on a popular television program.
Obasa elaborated: "During a meeting in Marina, attended by all the party leaders and members of the Lagos Assembly, Meranda openly stated that she has resigned and stepped down."
He further explained that this was the reason behind the withdrawal of his security detail by the Lagos Police Command.
He mentioned that since Meranda agreed to resign, it was appropriate for her security details to be removed. "When you resign from a position, the privileges of that office are taken away," Obasa, who represents Agege 1 Constituency, remarked.
However, on Thursday evening, the police announced that Meranda's security team had been reinstated and attributed the earlier withdrawal to a personnel audit.
Obasa was impeached in January amid allegations of financial misconduct and other accusations, which he has denied. On Thursday, he made his first appearance at the Lagos House of Assembly complex post-impeachment, accompanied by security personnel and supporters, stating that his purpose was to resume his duties as speaker.
"I've never been removed. Impeachment or removal is a democratic and constitutional process, but it must adhere to due process. I am not against it. If I were, then I wouldn't be democratic," he asserted while addressing the press.
