The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, has assured that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is being constructed to endure flooding for approximately 50 years.
Umahi provided this assurance during a stakeholder meeting concerning Section 2 of the highway project on Sunday in Lagos. “We will ensure that our pavement level is designed to counteract any climate change threats,” he stated.
He added that the pavement level would be equivalent to the first floor of several buildings.
“To preserve the roadway, we are constructing retaining boards, and this has already commenced. We also have a cable duct in place, which means there won’t be a need to disrupt the road. Telecommunications companies such as MTN and African Plus can install their cables without road interruptions. I have observed these installations myself.”
He emphasized that closed circuit television cameras would be installed along the highway, ensuring that response times for any issues would be under five minutes. Additionally, the minister mentioned the inclusion of an evacuation corridor in the highway design.
“We will be earning carbon credits due to our use of concrete pavement, which will generate no emissions.” He also mentioned that trees would be planted alongside the road to enhance its appeal. “With the Dangote Refinery, there is a need for a clearance of around 60 meters for trucks to maneuver in and out. We are constructing a flyover with a span of 60 meters, followed by another span of 41.6 meters as a counterbalance.
“We are flying over the Dangote Refinery, and a seven-axial road is approaching, which will be a remarkable sight, turning it into another tourist attraction. Moreover, I want to announce that along the corridor, there are lands granted to us by the state government to establish what I refer to as relief centers, where travelers can stop for snacks or refuel.”
He added that the centers would also feature supermarkets and medical facilities. Umahi expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders for their support. “I appreciate everyone present at this public engagement. Some attendees are here not for financial gain but out of a genuine love for this development.” He also commended the contractor overseeing the project, Hitech Construction Company, for their excellence and punctuality.
