The Organised Labour has issued a three-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to revert the electricity tariff to N65/kwh and stop the discriminatory practice of segregating electricity consumers into bands, or else face a protest from workers at their offices.
The ultimatum was communicated in a letter signed by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Festus Osifo, and addressed to the Chairman/CEO of NERC.
The letter, also copied to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Federal Minister of Labour & Employment, the Federal Minister of Power, and all Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), expressed the dismay of the labor leaders at NERC's alleged abandonment of the people they are supposed to protect. They accused the electricity regulator of bias and of siding with oppressors of the masses.
In the full letter, the labor leaders referred to their May Day address where they expressed serious concerns about the significant increase in electricity tariff from N65/kwh to N225/kwh announced by NERC. They criticized this decision as morally reprehensible and a disregard for fundamental principles and statutory obligations. They emphasized that as the regulator of the electricity sector, NERC has a responsibility to ensure justice and fairness for the masses and workers.
