The organised labour on Monday expressed its excitement and demanded speedy implementation as President Bola Tinubu signed into law the new National Minimum Wage Act.
The labour leaders welcomed the development and expected immediate implementation by the federal, state governments, local governments and the private sector.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by top government officials.
The new minimum wage of N70,000 per month was agreed upon by President Tinubu, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, after lengthy negotiations that saw the initial demand of N250,000 per month reduced to the final figure.
Akpabio expressed his excitement over the new national minimum wage of N70,000, which applies to all sectors, including the federal, state, and local governments, as well as the private sector.
He emphasised that no Nigerian worker would be paid less than N70,000 from now on.
The Senate President also revealed that the President will sign the 2024 budget amendment bill into law on Wednesday.
The Minister of State for Labour, Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, affirmed that the new minimum wage had been passed and all stakeholders, including the governors, representatives of the local government, the organised private sector, and organised labour, were involved in the process.
She stated that the government would ensure compliance and uphold its promise to backdate the payment of the adjusted wages from May 2024.
