Jamaican musician Vybz Kartel has been focusing on his health since being released on July 31.
Kartel reportedly struggled with Graves' disease, an autoimmune illness that affects the thyroid gland, for much of his time in prison.
His physician, Dr Karen Phillips, testified that the illness had seriously damaged his heart function, putting him at risk of a heart attack or perhaps death while asleep.
In an interview with FOX 5's Lisa Evers, Kartel said he was working on a new health routine with his doctor to assist manage his condition.
He said: "Healthwise, you know I'm working on my health right now, but just being free is just an amazing feeling."
Kartel was released after a court ruled against a retrial in the murder case of Clive "Lizard" Williams, whose body was never found.
The court acknowledged Kartel's health issues in its final decision, noting that his condition had not improved and could prevent him from serving a longer sentence if a retrial occurred.
