KANO, Nigeria - Amid increasing tensions surrounding the Kano Emirate, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, has opted to cancel his scheduled Eid Durbar (parade), attributing the decision to security issues and the necessity of preserving stability.
This cancellation occurred just hours after the emir initially declared that the traditional festivities would take place to mark the conclusion of Ramadan.
In a video address shared yesterday, Bayero stated that after discussions with elders, religious leaders, and members of his Emirate Council, he determined that the event should not go forward if it posed a risk to public safety.
“The Durbar is a beloved tradition, but if continuing it threatens harmony, it is more prudent to forgo it for the sake of peace,” he noted.
His original plans had been officially communicated to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, shortly after Governor Abba Yusuf greenlit arrangements for the celebration under the governance of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir.
Bayero called on the people of Kano to accept this decision positively and urged the Muslim community to utilize the festive season to enhance social bonds and encourage unity.
He also sent heartfelt greetings to Muslims on the successful conclusion of Ramadan and prayed for divine blessings.
This recent turn of events adds to the ongoing leadership conflict in the Kano Emirate, where both Bayero and Sanusi II continue to stake their claims to the throne.
