KADUNA, Nigeria - The Kaduna State Government has decided to engage with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve the issues that prompted the strike at the Kaduna State University (KASU).
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Rabiu Yunusa, made this announcement during a press conference, stating that the Ministry and KASU management will reconvene with ASUU to reach a resolution.
Rabiu noted that a prior agreement had been made with the university lecturers and approvals were on the verge of being granted before ASUU initiated the strike.
He mentioned, “The outstanding claims of ASUU amount to around N4 billion, which predates this administration. However, the Governor has promised to settle all their allowances in phases, considering the financial constraints faced by Kaduna State.”
The Permanent Secretary indicated that the strike could undermine the progress KASU has achieved under the current administration.
Rabiu emphasized that Governor Uba Sani has made significant contributions towards establishing KASU as one of the leading state-owned universities in Nigeria, particularly through the accreditation of nine science programs.
“The Governor has allocated over N290 million to the university to support the National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation, demonstrating his commitment to KASU's development,” he remarked.
“The Ministry of Education appreciates Governor Uba Sani for his efforts in the education sector.
He consistently meets our requests. The KASU chapter of ASUU should recognize that he follows through on his commitments.”
Sani was instrumental in the construction of the Faculty of Engineering, which stands as the largest investment made in any state university, at KASU’s permanent campus, while he was serving as a Senator in the National Assembly.
