In a surprising turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been removed from office by lawmakers due to alleged gross misconduct and abuse of power.
Following his impeachment, the lawmakers have chosen Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker, as the new speaker.
Additionally, on Monday, they elected Mojeed Fatai, the former Chief Whip, as the new deputy speaker.
It has been reported that Obasa's impeachment took place shortly after he traveled to the United States for personal matters.
His removal came just days after allegations surfaced that he had spent N43.5 billion on backup vehicles for lawmakers, the construction of alternative gates within the assembly complex, and other contentious activities.
This development signifies the end of Obasa's tenure as speaker, which began on June 8, 2015, when he took office alongside former one-term governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
