Human rights advocate Martins Otse, commonly referred to as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after fulfilling the administrative bail requirements set by the agency.
Otse was granted bail pending the completion of investigations into allegations against him, having reportedly acknowledged some of the charges during his five-day detention.
The social media figure is anticipated to face court proceedings once the investigations are finalized, as he stands accused of various financial crimes.
EFCC sources have confirmed that while VDM has been released, he must report daily to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja at 10 a.m. as part of his bail conditions.
This ongoing monitoring is said to be associated with the investigation, allowing the commission to determine whether formal charges will be pursued.
Fellow human rights activist Omoyele Sowore announced VDM’s release, expressing gratitude for the tireless efforts that resulted in his freedom from what he termed "unjust detention" and noted that VDM is now accompanied by his spirited lawyer, Adeyanju Deji.
Upon his release on Wednesday, VDM spoke to his supporters, challenging the allegations against him by asking, “How can they accuse me of money laundering when I have no money?” Known for his candid views on social issues and claims of corruption, VDM was apprehended on May 2nd after receiving multiple petitions alleging financial wrongdoing.
The EFCC indicated that his arrest was prompted by his failure to respond to several requests for questioning, but clarified that his detention was unrelated to his criticisms of the agency.
