Japan To Strip Recognition From Unification Church

POSTED ON October 12, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole •   VIEWS 288
The Japan has announced its intention to withdraw official recognition from the Unification Church, a prominent sect that has come under intense scrutiny since the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida initiated an investigation into the church last year following revelations that Abe's alleged assassin was motivated by resentment against the religious group. The Unification Church has faced accusations of coercing its members into making substantial donations and has been linked to cases of child neglect among its followers. The government's move, if granted, would result in a court dissolution order, causing the church to lose its tax-exempt status and various legal privileges. However, it would still be allowed to continue its religious practices. Education Minister Masahito Moriyama conveyed the government's stance, stating, "In view of the extensive damage caused, we find that it falls under the grounds for ordering dissolution as stated in the religious corporations law." A panel of experts unanimously supported this decision. He further explained, "The church forced a number of people to contribute donations and buy items... in a way that restricted their free decision-making and sabotaged their sound judgment." The official request for court dissolution will be submitted to the Tokyo District Court as early as Friday, once preparations are finalized. Prime Minister Kishida emphasized that the government's actions are based on facts and a thorough review of the matter. He stated, "Based on the law and in accordance with the objective facts, careful work was done, and the Minister of Education made the decision." The assassination of Shinzo Abe last year, during a campaign speech in the western Nara region, sent shockwaves through Japan. The alleged perpetrator, Tetsuya Yamagami, held deep resentment against the Unification Church due to significant donations made by his mother, which ultimately bankrupted their family. Yamagami could potentially face the death penalty if convicted. Furthermore, investigations following Abe's assassination revealed close ties between the Unification Church and numerous conservative ruling lawmakers in Japan. Four of Kishida's ministers subsequently resigned amid allegations of financial irregularities or connections to the controversial religious group.
