LAGOS,Nigeria - The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to creating an inclusive atmosphere where women can be fully empowered to excel in their various endeavors.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed this commitment at an event hosted by the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) in celebration of the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD).
Rocketparrot News reports that IWD is celebrated worldwide on March 8 to acknowledge women’s accomplishments and advocate for gender parity, with the 2025 theme being “Accelerate Action.”
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the state’s policies aim to safeguard women from gender-based violence while providing them with opportunities to take on leadership roles in governance, decision-making, and entrepreneurship.
He stated that these policies are designed to help women entrepreneurs expand and maintain their businesses.
He remarked, “This internationally significant occasion is not just a date but a potent reminder of the crucial part women play in influencing our societies and propelling progress. This year’s theme calls us to go beyond mere words and take decisive, bold actions toward achieving gender equality and empowering women.
“In Lagos, we are not just voicing this theme; we are putting it into practice through intentional policies and initiatives that empower women across all sectors. We have made substantial investments in programs aimed at empowering and uplifting women to promote self-sufficiency, leadership, and economic involvement through 19 tuition-free skills acquisition centers and the Women Development Centre.”
He pointed out that these initiatives align with global priorities, acknowledging women as vital drivers of economic growth, innovation, and societal change.
Sanwo-Olu praised WAPA for actively engaging women in the state through its various programs and initiatives over the years.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, also stated that the ministry will persist in empowering women and girls via its training programs.
Dada emphasized that women, who serve as the foundation of families and communities, will continue to overcome obstacles, challenge stereotypes, and make significant contributions to national progress.
She recognized that despite these strides, women still encounter ongoing issues such as gender inequality, economic disparity, gender-based violence, and limited access to quality education, healthcare, and leadership opportunities.
The commissioner urged for immediate action and commitment to enhance the rights and opportunities of women in Lagos and throughout the nation.
“Our ministry remains steadfast in our commitment to support women through empowerment programs, training initiatives, and advocacy. We have established platforms that provide women with the skills and resources necessary for financial independence and self-sufficiency.
“The challenges women encounter at home, in the workplace, or within society can profoundly impact their mental and emotional health. We must progress from promises to actionable solutions that will empower women and uplift the marginalized,” Dada emphasized.
Rocketparrot News reported that women from all local governments and local council development areas in the state gathered at the Onikan Stadium, the event's venue, to celebrate IWD.
Also present at the event were the wife of the state governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; the wife of the deputy governor, Oluremi Hamzat; and spouses of other top state government officials
