Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi has been sentenced to death for supporting demonstrations against the mandatory hijab.
The rapper's detention for more than eighteen months stems from his endorsement of the protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's untimely death in 2022, shortly after her arrest for donning an unconventional hijab.
His attorney, Amir Raisian, revealed that Toomaj Salehi was given the death penalty by Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court on Wednesday for the claimed crime of promoting corruption throughout the nation.
He said: “Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court… sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth”
Salehi was taken into custody in October 2022 for vocally backing the protests against the mandatory hijab.
The accusations against Salehi by the Revolutionary Court included aiding in inciting rebellion, participating in unlawful gatherings, spreading anti-government propaganda, and encouraging riots.
Despite the Iranian Supreme Court’s examination of the case and its directive to the lower court to correct any errors in the judgment, the Revolutionary Court refused to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision.
