LAGOS, Nigeria (NAN) - An industrialist, Funlayo Bakare-Okeowo, has presented essential action plans aimed at supporting women in leadership roles, business, and the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Bakare-Okeowo, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FAE Envelopes Ltd., shared these plans during the Lagos Business School (LBS) 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) event held on Saturday.
She stressed the importance of providing women with ongoing leadership development and professional growth opportunities to succeed in their careers.
According to her, such opportunities encompass formal training courses, leadership workshops, and executive coaching.
She pointed to leading women like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Mo Abudu, and Dr. Lisa Su as examples that demonstrate women's capability to lead industries to unprecedented heights.
The industrialist highlighted that investing in women's economic empowerment promotes gender equality, alleviates poverty, and drives inclusive economic growth.
She acknowledged women's significant contributions to economies, whether through business, agriculture, entrepreneurship, employment, or unpaid care work at home.
“One vital approach to support women in STEM is to create robust mentorship programs that provide guidance, support, and networking opportunities for career advancement,” she articulated.
She explained that matching women with seasoned mentors enhances confidence and grants access to essential industry insights.
“Both formal and informal mentorship experiences are beneficial. Formal programs provide structured meetings and objectives, while informal mentoring happens through casual discussions and peer connections,” she noted.
Bakare-Okeowo also called for gender-responsive infrastructure to cater to the needs of women and girls, enabling inclusive and sustainable growth. She mentioned that infrastructure such as energy, transportation, sanitation, education, housing, healthcare, waste management, and digital communication can empower women.
She urged for increased involvement of women and girls in sports and creative arts, advocating for targeted initiatives to foster an inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
“A Nigeria where women and girls flourish is a Nigeria that thrives. Empowering women and girls isn't merely a moral duty; it's a catalyst for Nigeria's economic advancement, social development, and national progress,” she affirmed.
