The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force regarding the unlawful and extended detention of suspects.
The IG emphasized that suspects should not be held beyond the legally mandated time frames, and any officer found guilty of such infractions will face severe disciplinary action.
Egbetokun highlighted that illegal detentions undermine public trust and confidence in the police, urging officers to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to human rights.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IG stressed the significance of complying with the constitutionally guaranteed rights, specifically Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which safeguard human dignity and personal liberty.
He stated, “The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reminded all members of the Nigeria Police Force of the necessity to honor fundamental rights concerning pre-trial detentions.
“The IGP underlined that following legally established detention periods is not just a legal requirement but a vital component of preserving the dignity and rights of individuals, as stated in Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which affirms the rights to dignity and personal liberty.
“The IG warns against any actions that could result in unlawful or prolonged detentions, which may diminish public trust and confidence in the police, reiterating that any officer found breaching these principles will face serious repercussions.
By advocating for a culture of accountability within the Force, the IGP encourages officers to maintain the highest standards of conduct in their dealings with the public.”
Adejobi reaffirmed the dedication of the current police leadership to upholding human rights while ensuring law enforcement.
“The Nigeria Police Force is devoted to treating all individuals in custody with respect and in line with the law.
The current police leadership's commitment to human rights reflects a broader vision for a police force that effectively maintains law and order while being dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of every individual,” he stated.
