Haaland Makes History As He Breaks Manchester City's Single-Season Goals Record

POSTED ON March 14, 2023 •   Uncategorized      BY Akinbohun Samuel •   VIEWS 82

Erling Haaland broke yet another record on a phenomenal night for the Manchester City striker, scoring five goals including a first-half hat-trick as his team trounced RB Leipzig 7-0 to secure a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Haaland, who has scored an incredible 39 goals in 36 games since joining City last summer, surpassed Tommy Johnson's record for most goals scored by a City player in a single season, which had stood for 94 years. Despite the achievement being made in March, Haaland's goalscoring exploits show no signs of slowing down.

Speaking to BT Sport, Haaland said "my super strength is scoring goals" and credited his quick thinking and ability to place the ball where the goalkeeper isn't. He also admitted to feeling exhausted after his celebrations.

His five goals against Leipzig equalled the record for most goals in a single Champions League game, previously achieved by Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano. Haaland now has 33 goals in 25 Champions League games, becoming the youngest player to reach the 30-goal mark at the age of 22 years and 236 days, 116 days younger than previous record holder Kylian Mbappe.

Haaland's tally of 10 goals in the competition this season is also a new record for a City player in a single Champions League campaign. His goals came in quick succession, with four of his finishes being tap-ins from rebounds as he showed excellent positioning to score five goals in just 35 minutes either side of half-time. Haaland also recorded his fifth hat-trick of the season in a blistering first-half display, and jokingly told manager Pep Guardiola he would have loved to score a double hat-trick.

With potentially 19 more games left to play this season, the question now is what other records will Haaland break in his sensational debut season at Manchester City.
