Gunman Claims Three Lives At Las Vegas University

POSTED ON December 7, 2023 •   World      BY Oluwakemi Ademuyiwa •   VIEWS 121
In a harrowing incident that unfolded on Wednesday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), three individuals lost their lives, and another suffered serious injuries in a shocking act of violence. The assailant, identified as a 67-year-old career college professor, was ultimately shot dead by police. The incident occurred in close proximity to the bustling tourist hub of the Las Vegas Strip, adding another grim chapter to the prevailing issue of gun violence in the United States. During a press conference, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed the tragic toll, stating, "Three of the victims are confirmed deceased." He also disclosed that a fourth victim, initially in critical condition, was later upgraded to stable. The identity of the assailant has not been immediately disclosed. However, sources from law enforcement, as reported by CNN and the Los Angeles Times, indicated that the gunman had ties to schools in Georgia and North Carolina. It remains unclear what connection he had with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. President Joe Biden, responding to the incident, issued a statement condemning the "horrific act of gun violence" that had unfolded on a college campus. Police swiftly responded to reports of an active shooter at 11:45 am (1945 GMT), as detailed by Sheriff McMahill. Two officers engaged the suspect in a shootout, resulting in the assailant's demise. University police chief Adam Garcia confirmed that the suspect was struck and declared deceased on the scene. The incident transpired during an outdoor gathering of students, where activities such as games and food consumption were taking place. Sheriff McMahill highlighted the significance of the prompt response, stating, "If it hadn’t been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers who responded, there could have been countless additional lives taken." As investigations unfold, authorities are yet to release further information regarding the identities of the victims and the gunman. Next-of-kin notifications are currently underway. The incident at UNLV adds to the growing concern over gun violence, prompting renewed discussions on measures to address this pervasive issue in American society.
