In a recent announcement, the Federal Government has assured workers of its commitment to settle the N35,000 wage arrears and confirmed the resumption of wage payments. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, conveyed this commitment during separate meetings with the Trade Union Congress and Congress of University Academics in Abuja on Wednesday.
Onyejeocha emphasized the government's dedication to addressing issues in the 2023 National Minimum Wage agreement with Organised Labour. She underscored the importance of open communication with trade unions, aiming to strengthen labor relations, prevent future strikes, and foster a harmonious work environment.
During her meetings, Onyejeocha acknowledged the challenges faced by trade unions, assuring them that the government is actively working to fulfill agreements. She specifically mentioned the ongoing payment of the N35,000 wage award, assuring timely settlement of outstanding amounts.
The Minister also highlighted President's commitment to addressing the new national minimum wage, ensuring the committee starts working promptly. She expressed eagerness to engage stakeholders and fulfill agreements, even those from the past.
Commending the Trade Union Congress for their faith in the government, Onyejeocha assured them of the government's continuous readiness to listen and collaborate for the greater good.
Previously, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, suggested a wage adjustment to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal. Under President Bola Tunubu's administration, Labour Unions and the Federal Government had agreed on a six-month N35,000 wage award for lower cadre workers to cushion the subsidy removal effects.
Trade Union Congress President, Comrade Festus Osifo, praised the government's steps, noting the fulfillment of 80% of the agreement with the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and urged the completion of the remaining 20%. Osifo emphasized their proactive engagement with the government rather than waiting for failures to occur.
