Governor of Cross River State Senator Bassey Otu has approached the state House of Assembly for approval to reorganise and appoint new members for the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC).
This was contained in an executive memo signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Anthony Enoh, and forwarded to the state House of Assembly.
According to the memo, the governor accused CROSIEC of gross inefficiency, which led to the inability of the state government to conduct local government council elections.
Governor Otu had said in the executive memo, “I have observed a cavalier work attitude by the chairman and members of the state electoral commission, which has led to the inability of the state government to conduct local government council elections.”
Upon the receipt of the executive memo, and subsequent adoption as a property of the House, the chairman of CROSIEC, Barr. Mike Ushie tendered his resignation effective immediately.
Ushie, reportedly endorse his resignation, saying,“Yes, I have resigned and the resignation letter has been forwarded to the governor.”
In his resignation letter addressed to the governor through the SSG, Ushie said, “I write to resign my appointment as the chairman of Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission. The decision is to enable me to return to the university for further research work, having served for over six years in that capacity.
“May I use this opportunity to thank the governor and people of Cross River State for the privilege to serve."
