Google is rolling out a significant update to Gmail's auto-categorizing inboxes with a refreshed "Updates" inbox.
This enhancement is now available on both Android and iOS versions of the app, accessible via the respective app stores.
1 who announced this in a blog post said the update aims to help users focus on important emails by shifting lower-priority messages out of the Primary inbox.
Gmail's categorized inboxes—Primary, Promotions, Social, Updates, and Forums—have long been a feature designed to aid users in managing their emails more effectively.
The new change specifically targets the "Updates" inbox, which previously housed personal auto-generated updates like confirmations, receipts, bills, and statements.
With this update, Gmail will now move less urgent emails, such as automatic airline mileage statements or account creation confirmations, from the Primary inbox to the Updates inbox.
This adjustment is designed to ensure that only important messages requiring immediate attention appear in the Primary inbox, thus improving the overall user experience.
Users will be informed of this change through a banner in the Primary inbox thread list. The new Updates inbox will be activated automatically for those who already use the default categories—Primary, Social, and Promotions. However, users can disable this feature anytime by navigating to Gmail Settings > email account > Inbox categories.
According to Google Workspace, an experiment with this refreshed Updates inbox received positive feedback, prompting a broader rollout. This update is part of Google's ongoing effort to deliver features that enhance user productivity and email management.
By prioritizing essential messages in the Primary inbox and relegating less critical ones to Updates, Google aims to help users focus better and manage their time more effectively.
This enhancement continues Google's tradition of refining Gmail to meet user needs, ensuring a more streamlined and efficient email experience.
