ABUJA, Nigeria - The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has praised the management of the Federal Medical Centre Jabi, Abuja for promptly addressing the actions of staff accused of neglecting an accident victim.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, made this statement through the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Tuesday in Abuja.
In viral video sighted by Rocketparrot News, the victim was saved from a crash site in the capital by a Good Samaritan and brought to FMC Abuja for medical care but the staffs were reluctantly and sluggishly attending to the victim.
Mohammed highlighted the importance of timely and sufficient medical assistance in decreasing mortality rates and improving outcomes for crash victims.
He urged all healthcare providers to adopt a more proactive stance in emergency responses to save the lives of rescued crash victims.
Additionally, he denounced the repeated rejections of crash victims by hospitals, revealing that the National Road Traffic Regulations (2024) explicitly prohibits such actions and stipulates severe consequences for negligence or any misconduct that undermines established protocols for managing crash victims.
“We encourage healthcare providers to prioritize the wellbeing of crash victims and maintain the highest standards of professionalism to save their lives,” he stated.
The FRSC leader reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to work alongside healthcare providers and stakeholders to improve road safety and save lives. “By collaborating, we can minimize crash fatalities and enhance emergency responses,” he remarked.
The Corps Marshal also commended the good Samaritan who single-handedly rescued the victim and called on citizens to foster a culture of safety, discipline, and professionalism to make a significant impact and save more lives.
Report gathered indicate that the FMC management stated that eight of its staff, including four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants, are currently under investigation for alleged professional negligence.
The hospital's management informed reporters that any staff member found guilty of neglect would be held accountable.
The Head of Clinical Services at the hospital, Bioku Muftau, confirmed that the accident victims allegedly neglected by hospital staff, who were featured in a viral video on social media, have since been treated and discharged.
Muftau also stated that the patient with a head injury, who appeared in the video and sparked widespread public concern, was stabilized and discharged on the same day of arrival at the facility.
