United States’ 39th president,Jimmy Carter

The United States’ 39th president, Jimmy Carter, died on Sunday at the age of 100, the Carter Center confirmed.

Despite serving only one term in office, he went on to a renowned second act of humanitarian service and lived long enough to become the oldest former president in US history.

No details on the cause of death were given.

The former president had been receiving hospice care at his home for more than a year following a series of short hospital stays.

According to a statement from The Carter Center in February 2023, the former president “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.”

Carter stayed active well into his 90s, continuing to work with Habitat for Humanity and The Carter Centre, as well as teaching Sunday school at his church in Plains, Georgia, despite his illness. Carter established himself as a passionate advocate for peace and humanitarian issues, both inside and outside of office.

He arranged the historic Camp David Accords in 1978, providing a basis for peace in the Middle East, and he was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades of labour in advancing international peace, democracy, and human rights.
