Former Spanish King Hails Uk Court Confirming Innocence

POSTED ON October 6, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
Former Spanish King Juan Carlos I has welcomed a decision by a UK court, which he says vindicates his innocence. In a recent ruling, a UK judge determined that the former lover of the ex-king cannot pursue a harassment claim against him in London courts. Danish businesswoman Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, residing in England, had filed a lawsuit against Juan Carlos, who abdicated the throne in 2014. Her claim sought damages exceeding £126 million ($154 million), citing personal injury. She alleged that Juan Carlos had subjected her to "significant mental distress" through spying and harassment. Judge Rowena Collins Rice, in her written judgment on the civil case, ruled that the High Court of England and Wales lacked jurisdiction to hear the claim. She noted that there was no legal basis supporting the assumption of English jurisdiction over a foreign-domiciled defendant in these circumstances. Additionally, the judge found that zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn had not adequately demonstrated that the alleged harmful event, harassment by the defendant, occurred in England. While recognizing that zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn had a personal and financial history she wished to share concerning her interactions with the defendant, the judge's focus remained on whether she could compel Juan Carlos to present his side of the story in the High Court. Her conclusion, as things stand, was that such compulsion was not within her purview. The ruling effectively puts an end to this particular legal challenge in the UK courts. Juan Carlos I views the judgment as affirming his innocence in the matter brought against him by his former lover.
