Former President of NIgeria, Olusegun Obasanjo paid a visit to the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, in Owerri, Imo State, engaging in discussions on "issues of mutual interest" alongside other Ohanaeze leaders.
Following the meeting, Okey Emuchay, the Secretary General of Ohanaeze, addressed journalists on Friday, highlighting the significance of the encounter. Emuchay stated that fruitful deliberations took place during the visit, emphasizing its symbolic and crucial nature.
During the discussions, Chief Obasanjo was informed by the President General that Nigeria should recognize his sacrifices by erecting monuments in his name. The PG recalled Obasanjo's notable role in ending the civil war with the "no victor no vanquished" slogan, as well as his contributions to repaying external debts and recovering the economy during his presidential tenure.
Emuchay conveyed that the Igbo nation intends to bestow appropriate honors on the former President for his significant role. He reminded that during Obasanjo's presidency, several Igbo individuals were appointed to prominent positions in his cabinet, demonstrating a sense of belonging provided to the Igbo nation at that time.
The Igbo community appears to be more welcoming towards the former nation leader as they sing his praises from the times of his tenure as president.
