Still in the celebration mood of the 85th birthday of former Osun State governor, Bisi Akande, a retired Professor of Sociology and ex-National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Lai Olurode sings praises of Akande's exceptional political career.
In a statement released to The PUNCH, Olurode lauded Akande's prudence and described him as a politician rooted in the late Obafemi Awolowo's political ideology. He highlighted Akande's commitment to core values such as bluntness and uncompromising principles.
According to Olurode, Akande's political philosophy eschews the pursuit of power for personal gain and rejects flamboyance and political extravagance. He reminisced about Akande's tenure as Secretary to the Government of the old Oyo State, where governance and substantive issues took precedence over ostentatious displays.
During Akande's tenure as the elected governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003, Olurode noted that the politician managed the political campaign frugally, spending less than N200,000. Akande significantly reduced the cost of governance and opposed the inclusion of the First Lady's office in the country's constitution.
Highlighting Akande's achievements, Olurode mentioned the construction of a colossal state secretariat without resorting to borrowing. He recalled that during the inauguration of this architectural masterpiece, then President Olusegun Obasanjo marveled at Akande's ability to achieve the feat without taking loans.
Olurode also commended Akande's loyalty to political associates, citing his unwavering support for the late Bola Ige and Senator Bola Tinubu. Despite advanced age, Akande stood by Tinubu during challenging campaign travels and travails.
In conclusion, Olurode described Akande as an exceptional politician, emphasizing his deviation from the prevailing money-centric politics in the country. He asserted that Akande truly deserves accolades in an era where politics often deviates from principles and service.
