Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has emphasized the need for a more balanced and attacking style of play for the team, moving away from the defensive strategy employed during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
Despite the team’s rich array of attacking talents, former head coach Jose Peseiro adopted a defensive approach that saw the Super Eagles reach the final, only to be narrowly defeated by the hosts with a score of 2-1.
Finidi, speaking during his media tour, highlighted the necessity of utilizing the team’s offensive capabilities more effectively.
"With the calibre of players that we have, we cannot play that defensive," Finidi stated.
He pointed out the importance of finding the right balance between attacking and defending, ensuring that players are clear about their roles during transitions.
"In football, you must get that balance when you attack, when you defend, if the players are aware of what you’re doing and you attack properly and you know when to defend," Finidi explained.
He acknowledged the team's struggles in advancing forward and suggested a possible formation change, which might involve reallocating a defender to the midfield to enhance the team's attacking prowess.
Finidi George will lead the Super Eagles in his first competitive match as head coach against South Africa next month.
