Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has described the sad shooting on the set of the film 'Rust', which resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Tarantino indicated in a recent edition of Bill Maher's 'Club Random' podcast that, while the film's armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, carries main culpability, actor Alec Baldwin holds some responsibility as well.
He noted that actors should directly verify the safety of the weapons they use while filming, challenging the current industry norms enforced by SAG-AFTRA.
The union has previously indicated that it is not the responsibility of performers to check guns, which directly contradicts Tarantino's opinion.
The conversation comes after a judge dismissed Baldwin's manslaughter conviction in July, ruling that prosecutors mishandled important evidence.
This evidence was allegedly placed in the wrong file, thereby concealing it from Baldwin's legal team.
Baldwin has filed a lawsuit against Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza as a result of these legal blunders.
The discussion over on-set safety obligations remains contentious, with calls for tougher standards to prevent future incidents.
