Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State, now features a little stadium created by FIFA, the world football regulatory organization.
This was revealed by FIFA in a recent website statement.
The Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, undertook the $1.189 million project with assistance from the FIFA Forward initiative.
The project's goal, according to Abubakar Ladan, the NFF representative in Kebbi State, is to grow football in the region.
According to him, out of the seven states in the northwest, "Kebbi has the largest number of amateur teams."
He said that "this artificial pitch is a boost and a push in the right direction," saying that efforts to grow football in the state are "being held back by the lack of facilities."
In Ugborodo, Delta State, a simple facility was also being built, according to the statement.
The two initiatives have received financing from FIFA's Forward Program totaling about $2 million.
