The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has made public the decision of the Federal Government to investigate individuals holding fraudulent university certificates by security agencies.
This decision comes in the wake of an investigation initiated by a committee appointed by the Federal Government to look into certificate fraud.
In an address during the first quarterly citizen's engagement held in Abuja, on Tuesday, Education Minister Mamman said:
"Concerning the issue of fake degrees, we have formed a committee and anticipate their prompt submission of reports. Once the reports are received, we assure you that individuals found with fraudulent certificates will be apprehended. Security agencies will be actively involved in tracking them down."
Further emphasizing the significance of the engagement, Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu, highlighted its role in fostering awareness about ministry initiatives.
He underscored that the engagement aims to "foster mutual understanding among stakeholders and citizens, cultivate and uphold public trust, and enhance transparency and accountability within the sector."
"Of noteworthy importance," Sununu added, "is the aim of this engagement to enhance operational efficiency and streamline government processes by identifying and addressing impediments."
The investigation was prompted by media reports which exposed the presence of counterfeit degree mills operating in the Benin Republic and are being obtained by some Nigerians.
