The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, over the weekend announced that the Federal Government plans to utilize technology for monitoring mining sites nationwide.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Alake stated that the technology will complement the 2,220 personnel of the Mining Marshal Corps, which is comprised of members from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in order to combat illegal mining activities.
The corps has been deployed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and has received training in modern warfare techniques by the military to safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources.
Alake emphasized the importance of incorporating technology, such as satellite surveillance gadgets, to provide real-time monitoring of all mining sites in Nigeria.
This will enable swift deployment of mining marshals in response to any infractions without relying solely on interpersonal communication for intelligence.
Alake also highlighted the significance of implementing policies and initiatives aimed at securing investments in the sector, particularly to attract major investors.
He stressed the need for proactive measures to create a conducive environment for potential investors.
