The Federal Government has planned to send 60 trucks of fertiliser to each state.
The 109 senators will receive two trucks of fertiliser each to distribute to farmers in their areas, while the 360 members of the House of Representatives will receive one truck each for distribution in their constituencies.
The Senate discussed this plan during a plenary session on Tuesday and urged the Federal Government to expedite the fertiliser distribution.
The discussion was prompted by a motion put forward by Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West and co-sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South.
The motion, titled "Urgent Need to Address Food Insecurity and Market Exploitation of Consumables In Nigeria," highlighted the significant rise in the prices of goods and household consumables in the country.
It also pointed out that the latest data from Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics revealed a 40.66% year-on-year increase in food inflation, compared to 24.82% in May 2023.
The motion emphasized that the prices of food items such as beans, maize, rice paddy, yam, tomatoes, and onions have surged by over 100 – 300% without any clear reason.
Senator Karimi attributed the price increases to factors such as insecurity in food-producing regions, poor road conditions, higher transportation costs due to the removal of fuel subsidy, and the depreciation of the value of the naira.
He stressed the urgent need to address these issues in order to alleviate the impact on the majority of Nigerians.
