LAGOS, Nigeria (NAN) - The Federal Government has declared a complete closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos, commencing on April 27, for essential repair work.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, announced this during an inspection of the bridge on Monday.
She noted that the bridge, which connects Ijora Causeway to Apapa, requires substantial repairs, particularly the replacement of damaged bearings located beneath the deck.
Kesha stated, “This bridge has been contracted for a while now in various phases. We are now in the final phase, which involves lifting the entire bridge deck to replace the faulty bearings underneath. Many of the bearings are defective, and approximately 50 will be replaced across three sections.”
She highlighted the significance of the Ijora Bridge as a crucial route leading to Apapa, which houses two of Nigeria's busiest ports, Tincan and Apapa ports. Acknowledging the disruption the closure may cause, Kesha emphasized that it is vital for the safety of commuters and to avert further decline.
Motorists approaching from Ijora will be redirected through the Seven Up Roundabout to rejoin Apapa. Additionally, heavy-duty vehicles will be rerouted through Costain via Iganmu to reach Apapa.
Kesha reassured the community that the Federal Ministry of Works had meticulously planned the diversion routes, expecting no major complications, and appealed for understanding and collaboration from road users.
She also indicated that the repairs are time-sensitive. According to her, the ministry has received feedback from concerned citizens about significant vibrations from the bridge.
Kesha assured the public that the bridge would not collapse but acknowledged the urgent need for repairs.
“It won’t collapse, but it certainly needs attention. If you drive on the bridge now, you will notice vibrations. This is due to the significantly weakened bearings, the spring-like supports beneath the deck,” she explained.
Kesha added that these repairs would be the first major work conducted on the Ijora Bridge since its construction many years ago. The initial phase, which includes lifting the deck and replacing the bearings, will necessitate a full closure.
However, later tasks like removing and replacing the asphalt may be performed in stages, possibly on Sundays, to minimize traffic disruption, as per the official.
She underscored the need for public awareness, mentioning that Sen. Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, has directed that any bridge closure must be thoroughly publicized.
“We want the public to understand that this is for their safety. With their cooperation, we can complete this work promptly and restore the bridge to a much safer state,” she asserted.
