The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has taken decisive action in response to the escalating wave of kidnappings orchestrated by bandits in Bwari Area Council and other parts of the territory. Wike convened an emergency security meeting to address the alarming security challenges currently facing the FCT.
During the opening session of the meeting, Wike sought to allay the fears of residents, emphasizing that both his administration and security agencies were actively addressing the situation. He urged the public not to succumb to panic, assuring them of concerted efforts to resolve the security challenges.
In his statement, Wike stated, “We are all aware of the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly Bwari and some other areas where we have witnessed security challenges. I am also aware that sometimes too, the press overblows what is happening, but indeed, we owe a duty to make sure that FCT is safe."
The FCT Minister emphasized the collaborative approach being taken to find solutions, urging the Council Chairmen to play a proactive role in addressing issues within their respective areas. Wike reiterated the commitment of both the administration and security agencies to ensure the safety of residents.
Addressing the Council Chairmen, Wike issued a stern warning against unnecessary trips, emphasizing that they must remain within their councils and take responsibility for matters under their purview. He expressed dissatisfaction with reports of Council Chairmen neglecting their duties and leaving their responsibilities unattended.
Wike said, “This time around, we will not be happy, where Area Council Chairmen will leave their responsibilities and travel out. We have gotten reports that Council Chairmen travel anytime and then, if anything happens, they will not call anybody’s name except the FCT Minister."
The Minister also highlighted the need for Council Chairmen to fulfill their responsibilities, particularly in the context of recent challenges such as the Nigeria Union of Teachers' strike. He urged them to actively participate in finding solutions during the meeting.
The emergency meeting was called in response to the surge in kidnappings in Bwari Area Council since December 23, 2023, where assailants have carried out daring attacks and, regrettably, killed their hostages. On Monday, reports emerged that kidnappers had dumped at least four remains of their victims around the Jere junction on the Abuja-Kaduna highway, further underscoring the gravity of the situation.
