In a significant development following the suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, has taken charge, assuming responsibility for the crucial portfolio.
This move comes in adherence to the directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who suspended the former minister on Monday amidst allegations of funneling public funds into private accounts. The President's action reflects a commitment to upholding transparency and accountability within the government.
Enitan officially assumed responsibility after receiving a letter to that effect from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (oSGF) on Monday night. President Tinubu, through his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, had specifically instructed the suspended Minister to "hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation."
Notably, the President has also directed the suspended minister to fully cooperate with investigating authorities during their inquiry into the alleged financial improprieties. In addition to these measures, a panel has been established, led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, tasked with conducting a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programs.
The overarching objective of this panel is to conclusively reform relevant institutions and programs, addressing any institutional frailties. The ultimate aim is to ensure the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households and regain lost public confidence in the initiative. The President's proactive approach signals a commitment to fostering accountability and transparency in government affairs.
