LAGOS, Nigeria (NAN) - Human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, called on young people to take back their country.
During the sixth Annual Youth Leadership Conference titled “Resilience, Innovation, Social Responsibility and Entrepreneurship” (RISE 2025), held at the University of Lagos on Saturday, Falana emphasized that conditions have changed significantly, urging the younger generation to reclaim and redefine the nation.
He highlighted that the youth are currently facing hardships due to the state of the country and stressed the need for them to ‘rise.’
Falana remarked, “You must confront those in power when you have the chance, as some of them are from our generation. We did not endure the challenges you face today.
We experienced dignity in our lives. My generation had genuine visions for this country to rank among the best globally, thanks to our abundant human and natural resources. However, what has transpired? It is your generation's responsibility to take back the country. Additionally, when enjoying music at events like this, make sure to appreciate some of the great African musicians.”
He emphasized the importance of being motivated by these musicians to advocate for justice in the country. “You often hear that our country is impoverished. Mark my words, we are not poor. We endure material deprivation due to a lack of innovative ideas in our nation. They tell you that you are the leaders of tomorrow. You must first be the leaders of today and reclaim what remains,” he stated.
The event's convener, Olusegun Odufuwa, remarked that the theme – RISE – represents more than just an acronym; it is a rallying call for action. He described it as a vision for a future which requires collective effort.
Odufuwa noted, “Nigeria stands at a pivotal moment; our nation is promising, filled with talent and rich in diversity, yet facing numerous challenges such as economic instability, insufficient infrastructure, youth unemployment, and leadership issues. However, amid these challenges lies a significant opportunity. A nation is not built solely on its policies but rather by its people, especially its youth. If Nigeria is to advance, it must be on the foundation of a generation that is resilient against adversity, innovative in thought, socially accountable in actions, and entrepreneurial in spirit.”
