Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele risks arrest.
The Federal High Court in Abuja issued a warning of a possible warrant for the arrest of the embittered CBN Governor for failing to appear in court to explain the circumstances surrounding an unpaid $53 million legal fee related to the Paris Club refund.
Justice Inyang Ekwo on Wednesday while giving the order, ask the ex-CBN boss to appear on the next adjourned date giving him an opportunity to explain himself.
This development came after Emefiele's counsel, Audu Anuga (SAN), informed the court that they had been unable to reach the suspended CBN governor since the last order directing him to appear in court.
Anuga explained that Emefiele, who is currently in detention, had been uncontactable, despite their efforts to communicate the court's directive to him.
The case started in 2017 when a legal practitioner, Joe Agi (SAN), filed an application for garnishee to recover a judgment debt against Linas International Ltd., the Minister of Finance, the CBN, and Emefiele.
The court ordered the ex-CBN to appear before it on several occasions, but he was absent each time.
The dispute revolves around an alleged $70 million judgment against Linas International Ltd., and Emefiele was said to have released only $17 million, leaving an unpaid balance of $53 million.
The court had earlier ruled on January 23, 2020, that Emefiele must appear "to be examined on oath." However, with the continued absence of the suspended CBN governor and the inability to communicate with him, the judge adjourned the matter till October 31.
