The Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted embattled former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele bail after a protracted detention.
The court ordered his release to his legal team and his appearance in court whenever required.
Also, presiding Judge Justice Adeniyi directed Emefiele to surrender his travel documents to the court's registrar.
Justice Adeniyi emphasized the need to bring an end to the prolonged detention and uphold the principles of fair hearing.
Back Story:
Emefiele was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from 2014 to 2023. In June 2023, he was suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu.
Shortly thereafter, he was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) on allegations of corruption and money laundering.
Emefiele is currently facing trial on two charges: (1) illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and (2) money laundering.
These charges stem from a series of investigations into Emefiele's personal finances and activities.
In November 2023, Emefiele was granted bail by an Abuja High Court. However, the court imposed strict conditions on his release, including surrendering his passport and assets.
Emefiele is currently out on bail while the legal proceedings against him continue.
