The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the apprehension of 127 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud in Ondo State, South-West region of Nigeria.
The commission on its official X page stated that the suspected internet fraudsters were nabbed during a dawn raid at a "Yahoo party" hosted at both Signature and Abah Clubs on Saturday, June 8, in Akure, the state capital.
The EFCC said that credible intelligence showed that the 'Yahoo party' was initially scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, but was later moved to Saturday to beat security and intelligence networks of the agency.
The Commission said the suspects had given useful information to investigators of the Directorate.
The statement concluded that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights and the representative of Ondo East-West Federal Constituency, Abiola Makinde, has criticized the raid on nightclubs and lounges in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, which took place in the early hours of Saturday.
Makinde, in a statement released by his media aide, Moshood Alli, and shared with journalists on Saturday, condemned the invasion of privacy of innocent Nigerian citizens during the raid.
He emphasized the importance of the EFCC conducting operations with respect for the law and human decency, particularly in light of reports of raids leading to violations of personal dignity and privacy.
Makinde stressed the need for the EFCC to strictly adhere to human rights principles in the pursuit of justice.
He also called for calm as the matter is being investigated.
