EDO, Nigeria (NAN) - A diphtheria outbreak has been confirmed in Edo State, resulting in two deaths. Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the state's Health Commissioner, made this announcement during an emergency response meeting held on Tuesday in Benin, the state capital.
This decision came after the University of Benin Teaching Hospital verified five cases of diphtheria, including the two fatalities.
The emergency meeting was attended by representatives from WHO, UNICEF, local healthcare organizations, and key partners addressing this emerging public health threat.
“The increase in cases, alongside rising challenges like drug resistance and viral infections, necessitates urgent and coordinated actions,” he stated.
He outlined crucial strategies, such as deploying a rapid response team, enhancing coordination, and increasing surveillance and contact tracing. Other priorities include raising public awareness, engaging communities, and ensuring the availability and accessibility of vaccines.
